The Taste of Ukraine

Cabbage Rolls or Rice Holubtsi
I went out with friends for some really authentic and great Ukrainian food. It was a chance to taste for the first time some of the best Ukrainian cuisines in Vancouver. Actually, a Ukrainian friend invited us (colleagues at work place) to the Taste of Ukraine in Port Coquitlum last week. The cafe was not exactly located in a mall or restaurant building but in a factory lot. Even that, they still attract a constant flow of diners. The cafe was located on the 1600 block on Broadway Avenue in Port Coquitlum.

The Taste of Ukraine in Port Coquitlum was actually the central kitchen for many of the other eateries in the area and also handles all the catering orders for the Taste of Ukraine outfit. So, the food served there was really fresh and good.

Ukrainian Pierogies
Except for the Ukrainian friend, most of us was having Ukrainian cuisines for the first time. But together we had the most amazing lunch. for the most part of the lunch, we were unfamiliar with Ukrainian cuisines but our Ukrainian colleague told us that the cuisines served was authentic and was one of the better Ukrainian cuisines he had had for a long time. We started off with the Ukrainian Pierogies. That was a wonderful delicious serving of pierogies. The best pierogies I have ever tasted. Inside were stuff with meat or egg. Then, a little bit later, we were served with the famous Ukrainian Cabbage Rolls, which was stuff with flavoured rice and topped with tomato sauce. That was also an excellent cuisine.

Pancake or Nalysnyky
At the end of it all, we had more that we could have consumed. I think we were over zealous with our abilities but there were just too much to eat in one meal. Can you imaging a few small bodied Asians trying to consume the food prepared for the same number of larger Ukrainian men. So, we had to take away the leftovers.

And, the other must mention Ukrainian cuisines were the Pancake or Nalysnyky which was wrapped with fruit jam and whipped cream. Another excellent cuisine and an idea for my next morning pancake breakfast.

Ukrainian Meatloaf
Together, we have eaten more varieties of Ukrainian cuisines than I am mentioning because there were some that were pretty regular to us like ham and bread, mash potatoes, pickled tomatoes, pickled baby cucumbers, and green salad. I am only mentioning the unique and authentic Ukrainian cuisines.

There was another cuisine which I found really good, was the meatloaf. I have eaten meatloaf before but the meatloaf that we had at the Taste of Ukraine was the best thus far. Finally, Taste of Asia gets to Taste of Ukraine for an unforgettable meal.
